Dumbo
The other day I went to Bagelicious, a deli I go to on the weekend to get bagels for my mother and sister. I happened to be there with my sister and Cintia, and one of the guys behind the counter takes a look at me and starts asking me how much weight I've lost, because he said he was enjoying watching me lose it, which was a little strange but I was flattered I guess so I told him how much I lost and Cintia tells him how much she lost (it was pretty empty in the store).

I never know what people are going to say. This guy...I KNOW he meant well, but he told me, and I quote, "you were a real dumbo."

Ok, I know I was really big and now I'm not so big, but does that really give you license to say that? It really offended me for some reason. I know I shouldn't care, especially because I'm not that size anymore....but...I don't know...I don't think people really understand what it's like to have been that big. People say things all the time--little things--that rub me the wrong way about obese people. I'm still obese, and I'm right there...be a little more sensitive. I feel like people really believe that they have a RIGHT to treat overweight people like crap. I'm sorry, but I am 20X healthier than most of the "skinny" people I know.

Wow...that was TOTALLY out of line. Congratulating someone on losing weight and getting more in shape is fine, making a big deal out of how fat they were/how bad they looked before is WRONG AND RUDE. If they wouldn't say it to a 300-pound person's face, they shouldn't say it when that person becomes 100 pounds because they're still the same person. *flail* I hate that there are people in the world like this.

It's surprising, the things people will say to me...

Honestly, I don't even like it if anyone comments on my weight loss, because I automatically think "does that mean I was fugly before?" But I know that's just oversensitive. This guy, though...so much fail. >_<

You should find a physical flaw of his and make a snide comment about it. *mean*

Whenever anyone makes a comment I automatically get tense. Talking about my weight is a sensitive topic for me. XD

Well, he works at a deli...'nuff said. (OH SNAP)

I wouldn't have been shocked if he had followed that up with "you're looking kind of hittable right now." XD

People never seem to realize when they're sticking their head up their ass.

Wow. Talk about a backhanded compliment. This idiot obviously doesn't have the filter for acceptable and appropriate commentary in place.

Needs troutslap. Stat. ;3

Troutslap would be nice :)

Agh, my sister told me - after she'd lost 50lbs - some guys in the Pentagon were walking behind her, and one said she was cute, the other said, she could lose 10 lbs, and she just about lost it. Wankers.

I would have been really pissed. XD
Petals of Blue: why?[info]petals_of_blue on February 17th, 2009 03:01 pm (UTC)
Ugh.
Imagine dating someone with the inability to know what is appropriate to say and not say. I never felt so fat in my life than when I was with a moron like that guy there in your deli incident.

But again, it explains why he works for a temp agency and pushes carts at Wal-mart. Just like you said it explains why this guy works at a deli.

And I agree that people feel they have the right to treat fat people like crap. Just look at the fat hate threads on OKCupid. If fat were a race there would be a whole lot of people in jail for hate crimes.

Men are stupid. Proven fact.

Many a survey points out that fat people often do not advance in their careers simply because they are fat. Fucked up. I hate that most people take a look at me and automatically assume I am lazy just by the way I look.
Petals of Blue[info]petals_of_blue on February 17th, 2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
Oh totally. I've had the joy of my mother mentioning that to me quite frequently whenever I was interviewing for a new job. It sooooo helped my confidence *snicker*

I'm looking forward to finding out what kind of opportunities will open up once I lose say...another 50lbs because apparently experience and a college degree aren't enough or I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing.

I'd say by far one of the most insulting things are the people who step AROUND you or jump away when you're backing up as though you're some kind of massively huge clumsy "thing" that's going to run them over. The look on their face of utter disgust doesn't help any...

And I would've told him that

lkasdnioaeworjndiosajdnsa. *smashes things* Sure as hell you're 930248932 times healthier than I am, even if I'm "twiggy". |:

LOL! Only in NYC! C'mon! You need a real sharp come back line! Sling it right back at him, girl.

Hmm? I'm thinking in NY that could be considered flirting so use your powers wisely. ;D
amarissia[info]amarissia on February 18th, 2009 11:03 pm (UTC)
You're way healthier than me, that's for sure.

Sephy: "Anyone who doesn't live on Hershey's Kisses in healthier than you."

Pfft. So, wanna borrow Sephy and his phallic sword for when people need to be taught some manners? Also, that "enjoyed watching you lose it" comment seems slightly pervy. Freak.

*hugs*
